Dark Matter Bleeds Black

IMG_7933

Never judge a book by its cover or a coffee by the bag. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical about Dark Matter Coffee. I was torn because I thought that with bags so embellished they were trying to make up for what was inside and at the same time really enjoyed the artwork. Well, I can’t tell you how happy I am to report that the coffee quality is equal to the art! I received four bags of coffee from Dark Matter (I get to order the coffee at EP) but have only tried two. I’m actually writing this today because the second coffee I had was so good that I couldn’t help but post about it. It’s the Black Blood blend which has since sold out… It’s a collaboration between the band Mastodon and Dark Matter. The beans were aged in Basil Hayden’s Bourbon Whiskey barrels which contributed an amazing boozy flavor to this coffee. The whiskey def came out in the cup but it wasn’t overwhelming it actually had some nice peanut butter cup to it. As it cooled the whiskey flavor really shined! I’m thinking this would make a great iced coffee too. Black Blood is the second coffee that I’ve tried that was aged in whiskey barrels and I have to say that it was my favorite. Go order some Dark Matter now!!!

Fresh Off The Boat

Eddie Huang is my new favorite food show host. His show is Fresh Off the Boat which is also the name of his bestselling memoir. He’s the perfect mix of young foul mouthed foodie and serious culinarian. Essentially he’s Anthony Bourdain for twenty somethings (but funnier and edgier). It’s not just food though, Eddie touches on subjects like race, cultural assimilation, and drugs. It doesn’t hurt that his show is for Vice…one of my favorite sources for everything. The show hardly seems produced. You  get the feeling that each episode is truly what it’s like to hang out with Eddie and eat all the food. Besides all of that he refers to himself as the human panda which means we are soul mates. I’ve shared the Chengdu episodes below because they’re my favorite and pandas.

March forward!

The last couple of months have been full of ups and downs. I’m single again. I saw T-Pain at The Royal and it was actually good. We celebrated the two year anniversary of Matt & Melissa taking over EP. The #TNTNW at Valhalla Coffee was awesome. Make sure to hit up Marrow the next time you’re in Tacoma. Work has been super busy but extremely awesome at the same time. I feel like I’m constantly learning at Espresso Parts. It feels good. I’ll be getting the internets this week which may or may not translate to more posts. My goal these days is to do at least one post a month. Bike time is here so if you wanna take a ride with me sometime let me know!

Some of my favorite things right now:

Method Coffee Bar They offer multiple roasters and food options. A+
Spotify I love every John Mayer album…I love him.
SPRING!
Paper for Facebook So much nicer to look at than the original app. I like the functionality of the original over Paper.
Sacramento Public Latte Art Tournament SPLAT

January…so far.

Ohh my sweet Jesus you guys! I just realized how awesome it is to post up and chill at a coffee shop. I’ve spent years as a barista working behind the counter and never truly knew the joys that this could bring. I’m so about this lifestyle. People watching, free wifi, and espresso. If you’re planning on doing the same keep in mind that you should buy at least one drink an hour to pay for your seat.

Some of my favorite things right now:

Batdorf & Bronson Coffee The Dancing Goats espresso is real good.
Cycloramic App Take panoramic pictures HANDSFREE!
San Diego Coffee Network Great coffee folks doing great things for the community.
Only Burger The fried green tomato burger will change your life!

2014 do we continue…yes

I’ve been running this blog for a few years now and a lot has changed. I got married, bought a home, got a dog, divorced, moved, and started a new career. It’s kind of weird writing a blog because you have to assume other people are reading your posts otherwise your really just talking or “writing” to yourself. Either way it’s therapeutic and I enjoy it. I’ve been toying around with the idea of ending the blog but I’m not completely convinced yet.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you are one of the people that don’t exist in my head sorry not sorry for the sporadic posts. I keep telling myself that I’ll post more or rework the flow of the blog but I think it’s kind of perfect the way it is. Thanks for reading this.

Some of my favorite things right now:

Baby trashes bar in Las Palmas.
Magisto App
Bar Francis
Virgin America
Bay Area Coffee Community

National Coffee Day Round 2

Round two! Stop #3 Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. where I enjoyed a single origin espresso. The Costa Rica Llano Bonito Natural espresso tasted like Sugar Smacks. It was well balanced, sweet, and had a caramel/molasses finish. I really like the ambiance of this shop. The music was pretty dope too. I know it’s super hipster but Bon Iver’s Woods was playing and it’s kinda perfect for a grey rainy day.
The final shop for today was Sizizis. Usually I don’t say anything if my coffee experience was bad…not today. I ordered a macchiato and was served a bad cappuccino. This was not by accident because the barista called out macchiato. The drink was not good. I’m sure it not always this bad. I’m simply reviewing my one experience on this day.
So that’s it!! I hope you have a wonderfully caffeinated National Coffee Day.
